Pre-retirement programs afford those nearing retirement the opportunity to learn how to successfully transition to this next life phase.
Research findings indicate that it is good business practice to provide employees with pre-retirement programs. The changing role from full-time worker to retiree can be experienced as traumatic—so much so that some compare it to losing a limb. As people get closer to retirement they can become quite anxious about this transitional period diminishing the quality of their work. Pre-retirement education programs provide a better understanding of what to expect from the transition, thus decreasing stress and anxiety.
The objective is to realize accurate expectations of life as a retiree and encourage the meaningful use of time. Participants discover opportunities for social entrepreneurship, employment prospects, life long learning, volunteer and leisure activities. There is also a focus on identity and how best to transition to this next life phase either solo or with a partner.
Furthermore, pre-retirement programs communicate to current and future employees that they are valued members of the organization and that their well-being is important, even after they exit the workforce. Such effort on the part of the employer generates high morale among employees and portrays a positive public image.
My research has revealed that when employees feel valued and appreciated by their organizations they are more inclined to share their knowledge and train their successors. They also welcome the opportunity to return to their previous place of employment should the organization require assistance, or expertise that their predecessors do not posses.
However, my findings also indicate that if employees feel pushed out, or made to feel old and replaceable, they may not even return your call!
One of the greatest gifts you can offer your pre-retirees is helping them get excited about life after work. Pre-retirement programs do just that and allow your mature workforce to make a graceful exit.
